A spiritual refuge in the Middle Ages

During the 12th and 13th centuries, San Simón Island was inhabited by Templar monks, and later, by Franciscans from the Pascaline order of San Simón. Taking advantage of its isolation and serenity because of its location in the middle of the Vigo Estuary, these devotees found the island to be the perfect place for meditation, prayer and spiritual retreat.  

However, in 1370 the order was excommunicated and was forced to abandon San Simón Island. After a period of abandonment, the Tui Diocese gave the island to Isabelle, the Catholic Queen, to show their gratitude for her loyalty.  

San Simón: location of armed conflicts and looting

The strategic position of San Simón Island made it a point of interest during various conflicts. In 1589, the English corsair, Francis Drake looted the island, leaving an indelible mark on its history and that of the Vigo Estuary. Later, in 1702, the San Simón inlet was witness to the , where the English and Dutch fleets confronted the Franco-Spanish forces. This confrontation took place during the War of the Spanish Succession and added another chapter to the history of San Simón Island. A history that is explained in detail during our guided visit.  

From quarantine centre to prison: medical and penal uses

In the 19th century, San Simón Island was set up as a quarantine station, acting as a centre for those suffering from leprosy and cholera between 1842 and 1927. Its isolation made it ideal for this purpose, enabling control of the spread of contagious diseases. Later, during the Spanish Civil War, San Simón Island became a prison. These dark episodes have left a deep wound in Galicia’s collective memory. This history is what makes a visit to San Simón Island much more interesting, as within its hidden corners and paths, it retains unique legends and secrets.  

Today’s cultural and nature rebirth

After its time as an orphanage between 1955 and 1963, San Simón Island went through a period of abandonment. However, in recent decades, it has made a comeback as a centre of culture and historical memory.  Today, the island hosts cultural events, concerts and educational activities, and has established itself as a space dedicated to which, in its time, Also, its inclusion within the Natura 2000 Network and being designated as a Cultural Interest Asset in 1999 highlight its importance as a protected natural habitat and a site of historic heritage.
